I would like to start this by saying I do not own a handgun. This would be a different story, I think, if I did.
Usually I have a shotgun in the house, nearby, that has shells in the magazine tube. The pump action is freed and ready to rack a shell into the chamber to fire if necessary.
I’ve been thinking lately, why do that? If I were able to obtain a CCW license, I wouldn’t simply load a magazine and not chamber a round, right? So why do I do that at home? What if I stepped away from my weapon for one minute, and someone took their chance to break in. I know, I know, this is a big what if. But it happens every day, somewhere in this find land.
What if I ran to grab my shotgun and the assailant was only feet away from me. Would I have time to rack, release the safety, and fire the weapon accurately? My logical side says no. So lately I chamber a shell, safety already engaged, and place the weapon where I keep it. I am well aware of the risks of a loaded weapon, and it is a responsibility I accept.
